Buchanan makes case in Amite's mayoral race (AN17.com)

By: Richard Meek, AN17.com

AN17.com sent out questionnaires to the four Amite mayoral candidates. All four of the questionnaires contained the same questions, asking each candidate their qualifications, the challenges the city is facing, and their plans to move the city forward.

Only Ayana Buchanan responded.

Candidates Walter Daniels, who is the incumbent, Jonathon Foster and Damon Ellzey, who are currently both council members, did not respond. They were asked twice to respond.

Below is Buchanan’s response.

Why have you elected to run for mayor?

"I am running for mayor because I believe in Amite’s potential. This town has given so much to me, and I want to give back by helping it grow and flourish. I am passionate about economic development, youth empowerment and creating a safe, supportive community. I’m committed to making positive changes that benefit every resident and improve our quality of life."

What do you see as the biggest problems Amite is facing?

"Amite faces several challenges, including limited economic opportunities, safety concerns and a need for youth programs and community engagement. Addressing these issues requires a strong focus on sustainable development, accessible resources and community-building initiatives. My campaign aims to confront these challenges head-on with effective, long-term solutions."

Amite has faced some difficult times during the past several years. In your opinion, what can be done to restore its vibrancy?

"Restoring Amite’s vibrancy involves focusing on economic revitalization, especially through supporting small businesses, creating job opportunities and investing in youth development. Strengthening our community starts with empowering the people who live here and enhancing public safety. By creating programs that support young people and foster entrepreneurship, we can breathe new life into our town."

What are your plans for economic development?

"Economic development in Amite starts with empowering small businesses and drawing in new investments. As a small business owner myself, I understand the challenges entrepreneurs face, and I want to establish initiatives that provide support, resources, and incentives for local businesses. I also plan to partner with stakeholders and community leaders to attract businesses that will bring meaningful employment opportunities to our town."

What qualifications do you bring to the mayor’s office?

"I bring a wealth of experience from both business and community leadership. I hold bachelor’s and master’s degrees from LSU, have served as the president of the Amite Chamber of Commerce, and have led community initiatives as the Chairperson for organizations like G100 Oneness & Wisdom and the Church of Jesus Christ Apostolic Ministries. My background in business, community service and policy equips me with the knowledge and skills to effectively lead Amite."

What makes you stand above the other candidates?

"What sets me apart is my deep-rooted commitment to Amite, along with my extensive experience in leadership and community service. I am the youngest candidate in this race, bringing a fresh perspective and innovative ideas that speak to the needs of today and tomorrow. Additionally, I would make history as the first female mayor of Amite, breaking new ground and demonstrating that our town is ready for bold change. My campaign has ignited a passion not just within me, but in the many talented, intelligent individuals who are eager to join me in building a better Amite. Together, we bring a forward-thinking approach and a proven dedication to addressing Amite’s challenges with meaningful, lasting solutions."

If elected, what will be your priorities in the first 30 days in office? In the first 100 days?

"In the first 30 days, I would focus on building relationships with community stakeholders and local businesses to establish a foundation for collaboration. I would also initiate meetings to evaluate our current resources and determine immediate areas for improvement.

"In the first 100 days, my focus would include implementing a youth mentoring program, setting up a framework for economic incentives and starting community dialogues to engage residents in the process of change."

What have you learned that you did not previously know after spending time on the campaign trail?

"Campaigning has given me an even deeper understanding of the resilience and hopes of the people of Amite. I’ve learned that while we all recognize the challenges, there’s also a shared vision and a strong desire for positive change. It’s reaffirmed for me that, with the right leadership and a commitment to action, Amite’s future can be bright and full of promise."

Buchanan is a former chairman of the Amite Chamber of Commerce. She owns multiple businesses in Amite and is a community activist.

Election Day is Nov. 5.
